Three things to know about the Lenovo TAB 2 A8

Yesterday we reviewed Lenovo's second-generation 8-inch TAB tablet, the Lenovo TAB 2 A8. This Android slate runs Lollipop and enjoys some improvements over the previous version, including a slimmer build and more angular edges, a newer version of Android, and better audio software. If you happened to miss that review, be sure to check it out for a full run down of the specs and features -- in the meantime, we have a tl;dr summary for you. Here are three things to know about the second generation update.

1. It doesn't feel cheap

The first A8 felt cheap, and no one wants a gadget that seems like it belongs to a lower tier than it actually does. The TAB 2 A8 has very modest updates to the design, but those updates do wonders for the tablet's feel -- the round edges have been flattened out and the profile is a touch slimmer, and this makes a big difference.

2. There's a bigger version, too

If the 8-inch display isn't to your liking, Lenovo also updated the A10 version of the tablet, which features a 10-inch display. This one has a somewhat larger price tag at $199 USD, and unfortunately runs Android 4.4 rather than 5.0. It does, however, have more powerful hardware than the smaller version, including a better processor and extra gig of RAM.

3. It is moderately powerful

The TAB 2 A8 is priced at about $130 USD, and so the price alone lets consumers know that they're getting a mid-tier tablet. This isn't something you can connect to an external display and use as a makeshift desktop, and it isn't going to do some heavy duty data processing. It will, however, meet your every need if your expectation is to do regular tablet things: surf the web, play some mobile games, maybe even shirk convention and snap a couple pics with the rear camera.

PICK UP THE TAB WITH NEW, SAFE ANDROID PAY

n a quickly developing market segment, Google launched Google Pay to revamp Google Wallet and allow users a new and safe means for paying via Android operated devices.
The new Google Pay service is perceived by many as a revamp of Google Wallet. We would argue that it is a complete overhaul of the old service that entered the market one step ahead of its time, raising questions as to its efficiency and application.
Now, Google Pay, rivaling Apple Pay launched during the previous year offers users the possibility to cash out their tabs at a variety of location simply by using their Android device. Look for the Google Pay logo and let your phone do the rest.
At the moment, the release date of the new service is unknown. All we know, according to the Google Director of Product Management, Mr. Pali Bhat is that the service will be released soon. And it will come with a collection of over 700,000 retail counters around the U.S.. That is, in the beginning.
Of course, expansion of the list is expected, as well as further release of Google Pay in other key markets around the world.
Is it safe? According to Engineering VP Dave Burke, it is as safe as it can get. The service functions at any contactless payment counter. Users don’t need an app or a pin to access Google Pay.
However, they need to provide credit card data, which is safely kept away from curious eyes and only for users to know. At the moment of the transaction, Google Pay generates a unique virtual account number that does not disclose the real data. The ‘token’ is also a means to ensure payment security.
Pali Bhat added to the details:
“Android Pay does all the heavy lifting. You don’t even need to open an app – just tap and go. You’ll also see a payment confirmation and get transaction details right on your phone”.
What’s more, Android Pay allows users to put all those fidelity programs and cards and special offers generating gizmos at work without any hussle. At checkout in locations such as McDonald’s, Starbucks, Subway and others, all loyalty programs as well as offers are instantly applied to the tab. Pretty neat!
Android Pay is scheduled to work within apps as well, allowing easy purchases. No more credit card numbers or addresses. Android Pay remembers everything. Safely.
For the time being, Google is still in the process of partnering up with banks across the U.S in order to allow users to even activate Android Pay from the bank application.

Talks are on the go with U.S. AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile for users to be able to purchase the Android operated mobile of their choice, being instantly ready to tap and go with Android Pay.

LG Starts Global Roll-Out of G Pad 8.0 LTE Tablet

Share
After rolling-out its G Pad 10.1 tablet globally last month, LG on Thursday announced the global roll-out of the LTE version of the G Pad 8.0.
The LG G Pad 8.0 LTE will roll-out to the European region starting this week, and to Central and South America, Asia and CIS regions gradually thereafter. Details on the pricing of the tablet are not yet known.
It is worth noting that the Wi-Fi variant of the LG G Pad 8.0 tablet in June also started shipping to European regions first. The Wi-Fi version of the tablet was first introduced along with the LG G Pad 10.1 and G Pad 7.0 tablets in May.
The LG G Pad 8.0 LTE tablet features similar specifications like seen in its Wi-Fi variant, except that it has 4G LTE connectivity option. The G Pad 8.0 LTE features an 8-inch IPS display with a WXGA (1280x800 pixel) resolution.
The tablet is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor (unspecified) coupled with 1GB of RAM, and features 16GB of inbuilt storage with microSD card support. The LG G Pad 8.0 LTE features a 5-megapixel rear camera, a 1.3-megapixel front camera, and a 4200mAh battery. The tablet measures 210.8x124.2x9.9mm and weighs 344 grams.
lg_g_pad_8.0_lte_blue_orange_1.jpgThe LG G Pad 8.0 LTE is available in Black, White, Luminous Orange and Luminous Blue colour variants. The tablet shares the same UI as seen in the company's flagship, LG G3. In addition, the device includes QPair 2.0, through which "users can connect to their smartphones with Bluetooth to conveniently answer phone calls, receive notifications, and send text messages, directly from their LG tablet."
Other features that LG is touting on the LG G Pad 8.0 LTE are Touch & Shoot, Gesture Shot, Smart Keyboard, and Knock Code. The Touch and Shoot feature enables users to tap anywhere on the tablet screen to focus the subject automatically and shoot images. The Gesture Shot feature lets users click a selfie shot via the tablet's front-facing camera with the help of a simple gesture. The users would have to open and close the palms of their hands, after which a countdown timer of three seconds starts.
lg_g_pad_8.0_lte_orange.jpgThe Smart Keyboard according to LG enables users to type efficiently with minimal errors by tracking and analysing the users' typing habits. LG has also included the new Knock Code password lock feature, which the company claims is an evolution of the KnockON feature that was first introduced in the LG G2 last year.
"With the G Pad 8.0 LTE, LG is setting a higher standard for connectivity in emerging 4G markets," said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company during the launch. "Today's on-the-go consumers demand speed and convenience wherever they are, at any time. If a 4G LTE infrastructure is in place, we want LG products to be first to take advantage of the fast network."
