Xolo Cube 5.0: Android Lollipop, 1GB RAM, memory expandable to 32GB; priced at Rs 7999

XOLO has launched the XOLO Cube 5.0 smartphone, which it claims offers a true-to-life viewing experience.
Priced at Rs 7999, the smartphone supports quad band GSM, WCDMA, and HSPA+ upto 21 Mbps.
It is powered by a 1.3 GHz Quadcore MTK6582M chipset. Additionally, a 500 MHz Mali 400MP Graphics core support to enjoy 5 point touch on a 1280×720 screen to the fullest. At the price the device is offered.
The phone comes with Android Lollipop. An 8MP rear camera and a 2 MP front camera may disappoint a few. However, the rear camera supports full HD (1920 x 1080) recording if that is any consolation.
8GB of internal memory does seem meagre, but you can expand it to 32GB. The Cube 5.0 is armed with 1GB of RAM and a 2100mAh battery. XOLO claims 600 hours of 2G standby time and up to 6.7 hours of web browsing time on WiFi. For music lovers, the company claims 55 hours of music playback on a wired headset.

Revealed: The Smartphones that Deliver the Very Best Battery Life

Every smartphone user wants a device that offers terrific battery life, but which ones actually deliver? PhoneArena has taken a comprehensive look at battery performance rankings from several key benchmarks and has used them to create what might be the definitive list of flagship smartphones with the best battery lives.

DON’T MISS: 5 Fantastic Smartphones You Can Get for $300 or Less

Interestingly, the Sony Xperia Z3 actually came out on top in PhoneArena’s own benchmark and on the PCMark benchmark, while finishing second in the Geekbench 3 test. This shouldn’t be too surprising since the device comes with a 3,100 mAh battery, although it still managed to beat out the Galaxy Note 4 and its larger 3,200mAh battery in overall performance.

Speaking of the Note 4, both it and the Galaxy S6 also fared well in the three tests surveyed and delivered impressive battery performance. On the lower end of the spectrum, Apple’s iPhone 6 delivered the worst overall performance, which isn’t too surprising given that it has only a 1,810 mAh battery while all other devices surveyed had batteries of 2,550mAh or higher. Better battery life has been something iPhone fans have been requesting for a while now but it seems Apple would rather keep pushing to make their devices thinner instead of making them thicker with bigger batteries.

Best UK smartphone deals this week: Galaxy S6, Moto X, Nexus 6 and LG G Flex 2

Good smartphones deals are a bit thin on the ground this weekend, but there are a few standout offerings, as uncovered by our friends over at Hot UK Deals, including the highly sought-after Galaxy S6, the revered Moto X (2014), the mighty Nexus 6 and the lissome LG G Flex 2.
Before you dive in, don't forget to check out our gaming deals roundup as well.
Samsung Galaxy S6 SIM-free for £452.25
This is one of the best pre-paid prices for the Galaxy S6 (32GB) you can find at the moment. It is SIM-unlocked, meaning you are not tied to a particular network operator (but will have to supply your own SIM), and it is shipped through Amazon, which should offer peace of mind.
In his Galaxy S6 review, tech editor David Gilbert said: "The Galaxy S6 is a triumph for Samsung" and this is "an excellent smartphone and a true challenger for the iPhone 6"
LG G Flex 2 SIM-free for £339.99
Over on Amazon you can grab the LG G Flex 2, which as the name might suggest, is a flexible 5.5in smartphone with a robust curved design. This is good for those who like to drop and sit on their smartphones, or are sick and tired of battling to get boring flat slabs into their back trouser pocket.
Motorola Nexus 6 and Moto X (2014) special
Going straight to the source on this one, you can check out some great deals on a couple of Motorola's best offerings on their UK website:
Nexus 6 − 32GB: Midnight Blue and Cloud White, starting at £399.
Nexus 6 − 64GB: Midnight Blue and Cloud White, starting at £469.
Veteran phablet wrangler and senior tech reporter Alistair Charlton had this to say about the Nexus 6 in his review:
"The Nexus 6's design is premium, its performance is excellent and Android Lollipop is a hugely attractive improvement over what went before. The screen should have put image quality above pixel quantity, the camera's low-light performance isn't what it could be, and there's no expandable storage. But look beyond these faults and this is a truly impressive phone."
Moto X 16GB, starting at £229.
Moto X 32GB, starting at £269.

The Moto X (2014) was praised highly for its overall design − solid build quality and powerful hardware, coupled with the latest version of Google's Android operating system (5.1 Lollipop). It lost a few points for middling battery life and a poor camera, but those may be earned back due to its highly customisable colourful outward appearance that adds a touch of personality to the device.

Nokia Lumia 1320 Now Receiving Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2

The Lumia 1320 is one of the many smartphones that haven't been confirmed to receive Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2, so we always thought that it would be upgraded directly to Windows 10 Mobile.

But here is a nice surprise, as MSMobile.pl reports Microsoft has kicked off the rollout of Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 for Lumia 1320.

According to the cited source, Lumia 1320 is now getting software version 8.10.15137.148, which is the same that released for other smartphones like BLU Win HD, Prestigio 8500 Duo, Yezz Billy 4.7, and will soon arrive on Nokia Lumia 635 too.

If more Microsoft smartphones will start getting Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 in the coming weeks, there's a high chance that all Lumia handsets will receive it by the time Windows 10 Mobile gets released later this year.

Anyway, Lumia 1320 owners should start checking for Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 on their smartphone, which is about 545MB in size.

Here is what to expect after upgrading to Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2: MKV support for video playback, Reset Protection security feature, app permission toggles, Bluetooth HID support for external keyboard, Reorganized Settings screen with categories and search, along with the option to pin individual settings to the Start screen.

Sony Xperia M4 Aqua Dual review: Smartphone to take on stormy weather

New Delhi: Sony has beefed up its mid-segment M series of smartphones with features that were earlier available only on the flagship Z series. Sony’s Xperia M4 Aqua Dual is a phone that packs capability in a palm-friendly form factor. It is also one of the first smartphones outside of the Z series with a waterproof and dust-tight body.
As the country heads into its annual tryst with the Monsoon season, we had a chance to spend quality time with a smartphone that’s particularly adept at dealing with inclement weather.
This is a 5-inch phone--a screen size that the industry seems to be collectively veering towards these days--that feels both light and slim in the hand. Its rounded edges make for a very comfortable tactile experience, and its design stays true to the familiar Xperia design language: the classic round silver power button is about halfway down the right edge and is easy to reach, sitting immediately above the volume rocker.
There is also the dedicated shutter button, which plays to the Xperia line’s prowess in photography. On the right edge is a flush flap that conceals the microSD card slots, and the dual SIMs (both slots accept only nano SIMs) are at the top right.
The phone runs Android 5.0 Lollipop with minimal skinning, on a Snapdragon 615 chipset and the 2GB of RAM making for a visibly smooth user experience. While the entire Lollipop experience here is par for the course, there are a few areas that are amp’d up, primary among them being the camera app. Based on the capable Exmor RS imaging engine and a 13MP primary camera, the app adds numerous features that let you stretch its photography capabilities. For example, an AR mode that overlays all manner of digital creations onto a real scene (from dinosaurs to balloons) to morphing faces onto different bodies to the regular slew of ‘portrait beautification’ modes.
Like other phones based on the Exmor sensor, this one’s signature move is its particularly stellar response to low-light situations. In shooting various scenes--some in near pitch-black conditions--this is one of the few phones that picked up details where others recorded nothing but a black image.
But the title feature of this phone is its IP65/68 rating, meaning it is built to withstand fairly high levels of dirt, dust and water. The rating specifies that its internals are sealed against powder-sized grains of dust, and it can be submerged into water at a depth of greater than 1 meter. So it should be resilient to a everything from a drooling toddler to a splash in the pool with friends.
We threw several of the demanding real-world applications at it (a.k.a. games): the phone’s capable Snapdragon 615-based system more that sufficed with smooth gameplay at mid-level graphics settings. The Bravia engine has always done a good job with image color and clarity--in this phone, images were bright and rich (although appearing a tad saturated, as is wont to happen in most Sony phones). Even though it has a lower-than-HD resolution of 720x1280, its smaller-than-phablet screen size of 5-inches delivers sharper screen density. All in all, a very decent experience with gaming and watching videos. We did however note an issue--the phone tends to perceptibly warm up during intense and prolonged use (a bout of streaming video, gaming and the like). It’s something that is noticeable, but doesn’t necessarily hamper real-world use. We found battery life to be par for the course with the device regularly making it through a day of moderate use.

So should you buy this phone? If you’re looking for a snappy Android device with great photography chops, it goes up against several others that offer virtually identical screen-processor-ram specs, and at lower price points (the Mi 4i, Yu Yureka, Micromax Canvas Knight 2, ZTE, Nubia Z9 Mini, Phicomm Passion P660, for example.) But if you especially need one that’s built to take a beating while you’re on the road and are ready to pay a premium ranging from 30 to 45 percent on the price of comparable phones, the Xperia M4 Aqua Dual does carve out a space for itself.

OnePlus 2 will be more expensive

The OnePlus One is arguably the greatest smartphone deal around (although the Asus ZenFone 2 is pretty fantastic too).

Starting from $300 at launch, you got a phone with a 5.5-inch full HD screen, 13MP main camera, 5MP selfie camera and Snapdragon 801 processor.

The company has confirmed that a OnePlus 2 will be coming, while also adding that it will be using the new Snapdragon 810 chip. Otherwise, no other information has been released.

Rumours have been circulating that this new phone will be priced in the region of $322.

But now, OnePlus has addressed these rumours, saying that the high cost of the Snapdragon 810 means it will definitely be above that price-point.

"We're paying more for the 810 than we ever have for the 801. In fact, the cost is almost 60 percent higher, and we're not getting any discount," the company explained.

"We can tell you now that the price of the 2 will certainly be higher than $322."

Of course, the Snapdragon 810 has endured scathing criticism, as it throttles itself frequently and has a reputation for running hotter than rival processors.

But OnePlus has moved to reassure customers that things will be just fine.

"Before jumping to conclusions about the quality of the 2, we ask all of our fans and critics to just wait and see," the firm explained.

"We're confident in our products, and we were careful to only choose components that are fit for the successor of the Flagship Killer."

First look at Micromax Canvas Sliver 5: Good looking and slim, but bloated pricing

Build quality and design
The Canvas Sliver 5 is the slimmest phone ever according to Micromax. At a mere 5.1 mm thickness, excluding any camera bumps on the rear side, the Sliver 5 sure is a head turner. This is definitely the USP of the phone. Also apart from being a slim phone, it’s also light at just 97 grams. The metallic frame with the double layer of bright aluminium coating, adds a touch of class to this slim phone.
The volume rocker buttons located on the left hand side and the power standby button on the right hand side, both have metallic build and a good feedback. The top of the phone is clean whereas the base has the 3.5 mm audio jack and Micro USB charging port.
The rear side is made of glossy plastic and on the front you have a 4.8inch AMOLED display. The bezels are quite thick on the top and bottom.
Display
The Micromax Canvas Sliver 5 comes with a 4.8inch HD AMOLED display. There is a touch layer merged with the AMOLED display. The colours look vibrant and viewing angles are good. But the Corning gorilla glass 3 has a propensity to collect smudges. When the phone is in sleep mode, the display is flush with the bezel of the black coloured model.
Chipset, RAM
The phone comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 Chipset which has a 1.2GHz quad core processor. This is paired with 2GB RAM. On the storage front the phone offers 16GB out of which only 11.4GB is available to the user. There is no provision to add in a micro SD card.
OS, Connectivity
The Micromax Canvas Sliver 5 comes with an Android 5.0.2 Lollipop interface with no custom skin, which is a good thing. But there are some pre loaded apps such as Apps center, Chaatz, Clean Master, Hotstar, Quikr, Snapdragon and so on. But these can be uninstalled if you so wish.
The phone comes with single SIM 4G LTE connectivity. It takes in a NanoSIM card. Apart from this you have WiFi 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS
Camera
Micromax Canvas Sliver 5 comes with an 8MP rear camera with a Sony IMX219 stacked CMOS sensor. according to Micromax, this helps in preserving battery life. It comes with a dedicated Professional mode which let’s you shoot continuous shots, change ISO, adjust white balance and more. On the front there is a 5MP camera which also has access to the professional mode features. The lighting conditions at the demo stations weren’t ideal to really test out the camera. So you’ll have to wait for sample shots.
Battery
The Sliver 5 comes with a 2000mAh lithium polymer battery which according to Micromax offers a 1 day battery life on regular use case. According to Micromax, the use of AMOLED display, stacked sensor camera, helps reduce power consumption. We will have to test this claim.
Conclusion

The Micromax Canvas Sliver 5 sure looks great with the slim form factor and the light weight is an added plus despite the metal frame. The price point of Rs 17,999 is where it will face a challenge because of the low power chipset which you generally see in sub Rs 10,000 phones. Of course build quality is better and you have a seemingly decent camera, but considering you are getting much higher specced phones at a lesser price point these days, the path ahead for the Sliver 5 is crowded with more powerful handsets. We will have to give a final verdict on performance and battery life only after doing a complete review of the phone. Till then, do visit our image gallery for a closer look at the device.

Nokia to soon start making phones again

Frankfurt: Nokia, once the world's biggest maker of mobile phones, plans to start designing and licensing handsets again once an agreement with partner Microsoft allows it to in 2016, its chief executive told Germany's Manager Magazin.
"We will look for suitable partners," Rajeev Suri said in an interview published on Thursday. "Microsoft makes mobile phones. We would simply design them and then make the brand name available to license."
Finland's Nokia sold its phone business to Microsoft in 2014 after years of declining sales as it failed to keep up with innovations led by Apple's iPhone.
But months later it launched a new brand-licensed tablet computer, produced under license by Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn, with an intention to follow up with more devices.
Many analysts expect Microsoft to write off all or part of the $7.2 billion it paid for Nokia's handset unit, a deal that left Microsoft with a money-losing business and only 3 percent of the smartphone market.
Microsoft manager Stephen Elop, whom the U.S. software giant installed as Nokia chief executive for a time, is now leaving Microsoft in a sign the company is turning away from the hardware devices business he headed and back to its core software business.
Nokia in April announced a 15.6 billion-euro ($17.8 billion) takeover of Alcatel-Lucent in a bid to boost the network equipment business that is now its mainstay.
It is also hiving off its mapping business, which has drawn interest from German premium carmakers BMW, Audi and Mercedes, as well as Silicon Valley and Chinese Internet and technology businesses.

Upon being asked whether there were any preferred bidders for the HERE high-definition maps business, Suri told the magazine, "Anybody who can improve the business in the long run is a good buyer."

Microsoft starts selling on Snapdeal through new exclusive brand store

Microsoft has opened up a new brand store on Snapdeal through which it will be selling its Lumia smartphones, Surface Pro tablets, Office and other software, accessories among other things.

The announcement of the opening of the new brand store came directly from Microsoft through twitter. “Get the best of Microsoft products & services on our new brand store on @snapdeal” tweeted Microsoft India.
hough the company is already selling almost all its products through the regular retail market in India a digital store would definitely give the company direct access to the ever growing consumer electronics and software market in India.

The company isn’t selling a whole lot through the Snapdeal brand store yet. Current there are 10 Lumia smartphones, 31 mobile cases and covers and 2 tablets listed for sale. However, the two Surface Pro 3 tablets that have been listed have been marked as “sold out”.

The company has a lot more listings for its software, accessories and peripheral offerings. Microsoft Office 365, Windows 7, Office Home and Student, Office 2013 are some of the products on the software front. The company is also selling games and consoles through its brand store.

One of the primary reasons for Microsoft to jump the online store bandwagon is the increasing popularity of e-commerce in India due to ever increasing internet subscriber base in India. Brick and mortar retailers are already feeling the heat of online-only retailers like Flipkart and Snapdeal and with major multinationals like Amazon also joining the race, e-commerce in the country has only one direction to go – Up!

Samsung Says SwiftKey Keyboard Security Flaw Patch Coming in a Few Days

Soon after a report claiming that several Galaxy models were plagued with a keyboard security flaw, Samsung has revealed that it is working on a patch for its devices which will start rolling out in a few days. Notably, Samsung has confirmed that it will make use of its Samsung Knox security suite to fix the keyboard security flaw that was alleged to allow an attacker to remotely execute code as a system user on Galaxy devices.
In a statement, Samsung told Android Central, "Samsung takes emerging security threats very seriously. We are aware of the recent issue reported by several media outlets and are committed to providing the latest in mobile security. Samsung Knox has the capability to update the security policy of the phones, over-the-air, to invalidate any potential vulnerability caused by this issue."

Samsung without giving any exact release date for the Samsung Knox's updated security policy confirmed that it will start rolling out in a few days.

"In addition to the security policy update, we are also working with SwiftKey to address potential risks going forward," said Samsung.

According to a report by mobile security company NowSecure, the SwiftKey keyboard flaw could allow an attacker to remotely access sensors (including features such as GPS, camera, and microphone); secretly install malicious app without the user knowing and fiddle with how other apps function, or how the smartphone works. The security flaw could also allow an attacker to eavesdrop on incoming/ outgoing messages or voice calls while could allow access to personal data such as images and text messages.

SwiftKey in an emailed statement to NDTV Gadgets defended itself, saying the SwiftKey app available on Google Play and App Store had no such security flaw. The company added that while SwiftKey supplied Samsung with the 'core technology' to power word predictions on its keyboards, it "appears the way this technology was integrated on Samsung devices introduced the security vulnerability." SwiftKey said it is working with "long-time partner" Samsung to resolve the issue.

The statement added that the vulnerability was difficult to exploit, and only possible if the Samsung device user is connected to a compromised network (such as a spoofed public Wi-Fi network) and the device was undergoing a language update at the same time.

Micromax to launch a flagship phone tomorrow

Micromax has sent out media invites for the launch of a flagship smartphone tomorrow in New Delhi, India. The invite image carries cryptic text - "Mystery prisoner found locked in. Can he escape his destiny?" Also there is mention of Jailbreak on the image.
Though there are barely any official hints on what could be in store, the rumor mill point towards the Canvas 5 smartphone. We've been hearing reports of that one since last October.
While the details are scarce, Micromax’s new Canvas 5 flagship should feature a 1080p display, the new MediaTek Helio X10 (MT6795) mobile chipset coupled with 2GB of RAM and a 16MP rear camera. There will be a front facing 5MP camera and the smartphone is expected to be packaged in aluminum chassis.

We will have to wait until tomorrow to see if those rumors are correct, though.

Micromax launches 'world's slimmest smartphone' Canvas Sliver 5, priced at Rs 17,999

NEW DELHI: Indigenous brand Micromax has joined the "ultra-slim" bandwagon with the launch of Canvas Sliver 5 smartphone.

The company claims that the new Canvas Sliver 5 is the thinnest smartphone "end-to-end" at 5.1mm thickness. Even though smartphones by Vivo and Oppo are thinner, they have a protruding camera, thus not meeting Micromax's end-to-end criterion.

The new Canvas Sliver 5 has a 4.8-inch AMOLED screen with HD (720x1280p) resolution and runs on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop operating system. The smartphone comes with just 16GB of internal storage with no provision for storage expansion and runs on Snapdragon 410 chipset, backed by 2GB RAM.

Canvas Sliver 5 has an 8MP rear camera with Sony sensor and a 5MP front snapper. The single-sim smartphone supports 4G-LTE, making it only Micromax's second 4G phone. The battery capacity is rated at 2,000mAh.

Priced at Rs 17,999, Micromax Canvas Sliver 5 will compete against smartphones like Gionee Elife S5.1, Lenovo Vibe X2 and OnePlus One, among others.

Sony introduces its PROselfie smartphone, Xperia C4 in India at Rs 29490 -

The electronics manufacturing giant, Sony has announced the successor of Xperia C3, Xperia C4 in India with a price tag of Rs. 29,490. Last month, the firm has introduced the device worldwide.
Sony claims that the device is meant for selfie obsessed people as it boasts a 5 megapixel of front facing 720p camera with LED flash.
The Xperia C4 will be available in markets starting from June in single SIM and Dual SIM variants and in green, black and white color variants.
“Following the success of Xperia C3, we are proud to introduce Sony’s evolved PROselfie smartphone,” said Tony McNulty, Vice-President, Value Category Business Management at Sony Mobile Communications.
“Xperia C4 caters to consumers that want a smartphone that not only takes great photos, but also packs a punch. Benefiting from Sony’s camera expertise, the 5MP front-facing camera with wide-angle lens lets you capture perfect selfies, while its quality display and performance features provide an all-around advanced smartphone experience.”
The smartphone runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop supported by a 1.7 GHz octa core Mediatek MT6752 Processor that is coupled with 2 GB of RAM. The device boasts a 5.5 inch IPS display with 1920 X 1080 of resolution and 401 ppi of pixel density. The display is featured with Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 that delivers better, sharp and real-time viewing experience to the user.
Apart from the high-quality selfie shooter, the Xperia C4 sports a 13 megapixel of primary image snapper with LED flash, which is featured with Geo-tagging, touch focus, face/smile detection, panorama and HDR that helps in capturing decent images in low-light and 1080p videos.
The new Sony Exmor R sensor does boast of an extra-wide 25mm lens, along with a front-facing soft flash and HDR mode, for better low light photography.
The company claims the front camera of the ‘PROselfie smartphone’ to be “best in its class.” However, the front LED flash could create the ‘Red-Eye-Effect’ in the selfies during the night. Also, since selfies are taken from a shorter distance, the flash entering directly to eyes can cause a partial blind effect for few second just after the photo has been clicked. However, it could only be judged better after we get our hands on the device.
In addition, the smartphone is packed with a 2,600mAh of battery, that is claimed to deliver up to eight hours of video play and 682 hours of standby time.
The Xperia C4 enables its users to store up to 16 GB of data in its storage, however, they can expand it up to 128GB via a microSD card.
On the connectivity front, the phone has 4G, NFC, Bluetooth v4.1, Wi-Fi and USB v2.0 as options.

Chinese vendor Xiaomi offers Mi 4 64GB with a Rs 4,000 price cut; additional discount on Flipkart

The latest announcement from Chinese handset vendor Xiaomi reveals that the price of its 64GB Mi 4 has been dropped by Rs 4,000, and it will now be available on Flipkart at Rs 19,999 . In fact, if you head to the e-commerce site, the device is up for grabs with an exchange offer that lets you own it for a price as low as Rs 14,999.
This is the second price drop in two months. In April, Xiaomi celebrated the Mi Fan festival by offering the Mi 4 for Rs 2,000 less, but decided to make the price drop permanent. The Xiaomi Mi 4 was certainly priced well for its features and performance when launched, but its 12GB usable memory was definitely one of the major flaws. Specially when one considered the fact that with just Rs 2,000 more they could get the OnePlus One which comes with similar specs and 64GB memory (four times that of the Mi 4). Now, the new price drop makes the Mi 4 a steal, especially considering the exchange offer.

The Xiaomi Mi 4 has a 5-inch (1920 x 1080 pixels) IPS display with 441 ppi resolution. It uses Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection. It is powered by a 2.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor and has 3GB RAM. The handset has a 13MP rear camera with LED Flash, Sony IMX214 BSI sensor and 4K video recording. It also has a whooping 8MP front-facing camera with Sony Exmor R sensor. The device will have either 16GB or 64GB internal storage space. The Mi4 comes with Android 4.4.3 KitKat pre-installed, with a layer of the MIUI OS skin.

In terms of connectivity, the phone has 4G LTE, 3G, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n (2.4/5 GHz), Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth and GPS. It has a 3080 mAh battery. The device measures 139.2 x 68.5 x 8.9mm and weighs 149 grams.
