Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) recently announced the latest
variant of high-end Xperia Z3 Plus smartphone that is to be launched by June,
2015. The smartphone will be launched around the same time as the World Wide
Developers Conference (WWDC), with new features and will be lighter than the
previous Z3, along with an upgraded processor.
The previous Sony Xperia Z3 was launched with two variants,
a Z3 Compact tablet and a Z3 Compact smartphone. However, the newer, Xperia Z3
Plus features Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and has replaced the magnetic charging pin
with a flap cover USB port, keeping the phone water and dust proof. The
dimensions of the Xperia Z3 plus are mostly the same as the previous model, but
it is 5% thinner at 6.9mm.
The Xperia Z3 plus also contains a Snapdragon 801 octa-core
processor, which improves the system performance considerably compared to the
previous quad-core Snapdragon 801. Users can also access PS4-Wi Fi-connected
console games on the Dual Shock controller.
The new smartphone’s rear camera is the same as the previous
one, at 20 megapixels with automatic environment adjustment, while the front camera
has had an upgrade to a 5.0 megapixel camera from a 2.2 mega pixel camera. The
new model also features Intelligence Active mode that lets the user make
smoother videos. The size of the battery has been reduced to 2,900mAh from
3,100mAh, but the company claims that the device will give the same amount of
standby time. The new processor includes a smart battery saver feature as well.
According to Rob Kerr, who provides reviews on smartphones
and comparisons, the new Xperia Z3 plus will compete against the Samsung
Electronics Co Ltd OTCMKTS:SSNLF) Galaxy S6 and the HTC Corporation's
(OTCMKTS:HTCKF) One M9. Mr.Kerr does not expect users to be impressed with
minor tweaks and improvements in the new device. The phone will be available in
Japan as the Z4.
