Google's Android One was a great attempt to offer affordable
Android smartphones. While Micromax had its Canvas A1 based on the Android One,
the company's Canvas Spark storms the below-Rs 5,000 Android smartphone market,
running on the Android Lollipop operating system and with a price tag of Rs
4,999.

Design: The Micromax Canvas Spark has a good built and feels
good to hold. It has curved edges with the hardware keys placed on the right.
The company has packed in a 4.7inch display with 960x540 pixel resolution with
good viewing angles. It is easy to grip with a single hand. There are three
capacitive touch keys below the display that aren't backlit and you will take
some time to getting used to them at night. The Micromax logo at the rear is
identical to the one on the Canvas A1. Overall, it feels premium for its price.
Performance: The biggest challenge for affordable Android
smartphones is the performance and Micromax hasn't compromised on this front.
It packs in a MediaTek 1.3Ghz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 8GB internal
storage. Most importantly, it runs on Android Lollipop OS out of the box, a
feature that is missing in most of the affordable smartphones. Android Lollipop
allows you to block notifications for any particular app directly from the
lockscreen itself. The overall performance of the Canvas Spark is impressive
and it manages to perform most tasks with ease. During testing, it did freeze a
couple of times, but would start working smoothly again after a few minutes. It
did slow down at times while switching between the apps, but then, I am used to
high-end smartphones with the best processors.
Camera: Micromax has added an 8MP rear camera to the Canvas
Spark and it does a decent job. Most of the images captured from this camera
were clear and considering the price, I am not complaining. The results were
good enough to look at or while sharing it on social networking sites, but
low-light imaging had a lot of visible noise.
Availability: For the Canvas Spark, Micromax has tied up
exclusively with Snapdeal and it is sold through flash sale model where one has
to register before the sale goes online.
Battery: The phone has a removable rear, yet the battery is
non-removable. The 2000 mAh battery was good enough to keep the Spark alive for
over a day and a half but the charge dropped significantly when used for heavy,
resource-hungry apps.
Bag it or Junk it: A worthy device for Rs 4,999
