We knew Mobile World Congress (MWC) was going to be a belter
this year, well before it actually took place in early May, that's because the
rumour mill is getting more accurate, more detailed, and starting from an
earlier stage in phone development than ever before. We'd known for a while
that Samsung was developing its Galaxy S6 flagship (and the Galaxy S6 Edge
variant) and HTC was hard at work on the One M9.
We knew both were going to be in attendence at MWC in
Barcelona duking it out for the limelight. For both manufacturers this was
gearing up to be the biggest event of the year, the point where they would make
or break a big chunk of their sales by convincing onlookers that they were
offering the BEST smartphone on the market.
Both HTC and Samsung have now confirmed the UK pricing for
their respective 2015 flagship handsets. However, if you’re of a squeamish
disposition you might want to avert your eyes for the next couple of lines, as
the HTC One M8 will retail for £580 SIM-free –– a huge sum for a 32GB handset.
Meanwhile, the Galaxy S6 will set you back £599.99 for the 32GB version and
£760 for the 64GB version.
HTC has now confirmed it will release another “hero” device
in October. Translation: the HTC One M9 was not strong enough or impressive
enough to stand up to the competition, namely the iPhone 6, Samsung Galaxy S6
and the excellent LG G4. Not much is known about the new HTC handset just yet,
but the device has been confirmed by HTC and will likely feature a radical new
design –– a la the original HTC One –– improved specs, a QHD panel and, fingers
crossed, a HUGE update to the camera.
HTC needs all the help it can get, however, as the company’s
shares have –– once again –– taken a tumble following the release of the HTC
One M9, which was essentially an incremental update that just did not feel like
a big enough change from last year’s model. It wasn’t bad by any stretch of the
imagination but it also lacked a lot of what made handsets like the Galaxy S6
and LG G4 truly excellent.
