Well this is going to make Samsung look stupid…
Less than two months after the launch of the Galaxy S6 and
Galaxy S6 Edge, Google has pulled the rug from under Samsung with a major new
advance in Android M: expandable storage has a huge future.
Having shunned expandable storage in Nexus devices in the
past, Google has performed something of a U-Turn with Android M giving microSD
expansion a central role. With M microSD cards will be treated just like native
storage making it a boon for photographers and media aficionados.
It also reinvigorates a major for differentiator for Android
against iOS and, of course, makes Samsung (which has already come in for
criticism for dropping microSD) look very silly.
Let’s break it down…
Google’s U-Turn
The developer preview of the forthcoming Android M release
reveals a feature whereby removable memory cards can be ‘adopted’ by the
operating system and treated as though they were internal storage. This
functionality is baked into Android, no so special apps will be required to
support the feature.
It’s an unexpected u-turn at a time when many, including
Google, seemed set on a path to abandoning the microSD card altogether.
